OVERVIEW OF THE CHEVROLET VOLT:

Updated : 4-6-2010
The details that we know so for are as follows…

  • FIRST YEAR MODEL: 2011
  • SELLING FIRST PRODUCTION MODEL: November 2010 to California, Michigan and D.C. Then to other states as numbers ramp up. A European sister version is co-devolved called the Ampera. Also to spread development costs Eastern Countries are also targeted.
  • BODY: A 4 passenger 4-door car that with a back hatch opening to the cargo area
  • REAR SPOILER: And the side rear view mirrors all critical to the design to reduce wind drag to get a 0.28 aerodynamic shape. The design of the windshield helps reduce wind noise because in this car the engine is not drowning out sounds.
  • ENGINE COMPARTMENT SOUND PROOFING: The volt is a nice ride and one main reason is the quietness.
  • ENGINE: Electric front wheel drive with an on-board charge (sustaining) generator, run by a 4 cylinder reciprocating gas engine
  • FUEL: Primary 110 or 220 household current to resupply charge to the on-board energy storage system (in this model it is a pack of lithium-ion cells)
Secondary: Un-leaded Gasoline or (E-85 or maybe not E-85 compatible ) for the generator.
  • CONTROLS / GAGES: Two LCD panels one in front of the driver and the other on top of the center stack with a touch sensitive screen.
  • POWER USAGE: The generator only comes on to recharge the batteries and is not the source of belt driven accessories like the power steering, brake power or the air conditioner. And hot water is not used to provide heat to operate the heater because they are all electrically powered.
  • DRIVE MODES: Normal Economic mode saves as much battery power while driving. Boost or power mode gives you an extra 30 electrical horsepower. The shifter has a DRIVE and LOW mode which makes the regenerative braking more active in the slowing down of the car. Going down a steep hill will put the most back into the batteries.
  • REBATES: $7,500 tax rebate incentive from the federal government because it meets the requirement of being a plug-in electric vehicle
  • ENTERTAINMENT CENTER: Custom built Bose Energy Efficient Series system is engineered for the Volt’s unique acoustic signature, MP3 port and CD Player.
  • MOBILE ON-STAR: An App on smart phones will let you communicate with your Volt. You get charge times, locks and pre-start controls.
  • HEATED SEATS: It is more electrically cost effective to heat the seat than the cabin. Giving you as many miles possible, gas free.
  • LOW ROLLING RESISTANT TIRES: Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max developed a special tire and the Volt uses it to save on the energy that it takes to roll the car down the road. This is a very important factor in getting the 40 miles gas free.
  • PEDESTRIAN WARNING CHIRP: On the drivers control stalk.
  • 2012-2013 VOLTS NOW UNDER DEVELOPMENT: Many design elements are now lock for production of the first 2011 Volt so modification are all ready being looked at for the next versions of the car.
  • FIRST VOLT DOWN PRODUCTION LINE: March 31st 2010, Not for sale but will be used for more testing called validation builds from the Detroit-Hamtramck plant.

EXTERIOR PAINT COLORS

Black – Bob Boniface, Volt engineer, favorite color

Premium White Diamond Tri-Coat – Still a very popular color

Silver Ice Metallic – Color we have seen the Concept Cars painted.

Cyber Gray Metallic – The color of one of the test drive Volts. It is a stunning color to see in person, it was the car I got to test drive. It has a rich charcoal gray look.

Crystal Red Metallic – Not yet seen

Viridian Joule - Not yet seen - Named in a contest on ChevroletVoltage.com by Dave Thomas who also got to test drive the car.

e-coat Gray – This was seen on some early test Volts, but it is not paint, it is a undercoating like primer.

“Jolt” Blue – This might make it to production, it is from the movie Transformers.  In the 3rd installment of the movie “Jolt” may have a bigger role, timing at about when the the Volt hits showrooms. A sample of the car was at the 2010 New York Auto show. The 2010 Camaro – Bubble Bee Autobot version is a $1000 special addition package that can be ordered that has body strips, custom paint, door trim, special embroidered seats and arm rests, Transformer emblems on the fenders and wheel hubs. I seen it in person in Dallas very sweet looking ride.

I think a deep orange and a deep green/royal blue is missing. GM has a whole dedicated team just working on paint colors trying to find the emotional connection to drivers and color. Working with multiply colors sprayed together to bring new hues out as light and direction of viewer see it. watch the paint team video on chevroletvoltage.com
